Spillway node: use Throw, not Hurl
Throw the returning, boomerang-style Glaive upward, grapple to it, then dive down into it. Do not catch it and throw it again. A Glaive that shoots away or sticks into the low ceiling is the warning to check that you used Throw rather than Hurl.
This is the community-confirmed ordinary-state sequence. It does not provide a workaround for an already glowing, unbound Glaive.

No Glaive grapple indicator in the tutorial?
A separate player below the elevator could grapple normally but could not grapple to their Glaive. CosmicOdeum identified the same action distinction: use the short throw that returns, rather than the long throw. The player thanked them after trying it; the developer separately planned a tutorial improvement.
This is a returning-throw check, not proof that every grapple failure is a bug. In the recent Reddit progression thread, DizzyZwan22 also reported succeeding at the Spillway slam after using a boomerang-style throw, grappling above it and slamming down.
Check which throw you are using
Patroklos distinguishes the fast, returning boomerang throw from hurling the Glaive away. Niven’s attempts left it stuck in the low ceiling; after correcting the action from Hurl to Throw, they reported success.
Use the action names in your controls. Button bindings can differ, so a guessed PC key or controller chord would make this guide less reliable.
Follow the ordinary-state sequence
- Use the returning Throw upward.
- Grapple upward to the moving Glaive.
- Leave it in the sequence; do not deliberately grab it and hurl it down again.
- Dive down into the Glaive below you.
- Check that the tutorial advances. Both Bourdain and Niven reported success after this distinction was clarified.
Darkness is not proof of a missing light skill
The original player asked whether they had missed a way to make light. Patroklos said they had not missed that knowledge yet. Start by correcting the throw action rather than leaving the tutorial to hunt for a light ability.
If it still fails in the ordinary state, note the exact action, whether the Glaive returns, and whether you catch it before diving. The thread does not establish a universal timing window or a specific key-hold duration.
If your Glaive already glows
Stocked reports a different interaction after becoming unbound: grappling automatically catches the glowing Glaive and prevents the same sequence. This is one player’s state-specific report, not a verified repair procedure.
Do not reset or overwrite your save based on a guessed workaround. Check the current release notes and include your build and Glaive state when asking for help.
A tutorial improvement was planned
In the October 10 thread, the developer says they plan to improve this tutorial. The latest visible Steam release notes checked October 12 remain 1.0.0.61 and do not announce that tutorial change.
Use the sequence when your current tutorial and Glaive state match the report. A future clearer prompt may replace this launch-era ambiguity; it does not retroactively make a planned change a released fix.
